About US
Our names are Nicolas Robledo, Ashley Brown, Maritza Guerrero, and Ashley Lopez. We attend Jones College Prep and are enrolled in Mr. Saldivar's fifth period American Literature class. Our class began a unit on transcendentalism, which eventually led to the reading of "Always Running," by Luis Rodriguez. Rodriguez's piece led to several other readings of pieces that related to education, specifically about the flaws in public education. It came to our class's attention that public education is filled with inequity, ranging from unequal opportunities to unequal curriculum. The class decided to take action and discuss inequity in education, by having a panel discussion with educators and administrators. Further, the class decided to discuss specific topics in education and we chose inequity in preschool education.
We chose to study the unequal accessibility and quality of preschool curriculum because it has been proven that early childhood education has a profound effect on a child's future. In Chicago Public Schools, there are tuition based preschools, and free preschools. The Tuition based preschools are located in wealthy neighborhoods, have a high cost, and provide a high quality and individualized education. Preschool For All preschools are not usually located in wealthy neighborhoods, and only provide basic and average education. Generally speaking, middle and working class families cannot afford to send their children to Tuition based preschools, which creates an elitist system that begins at the preschool level.
